Funk & Soul Bands in London

Live funk and soul for events in London

Funk and soul is the sound of a party that works for every generation. Across London, bands playing Motown, Stax, disco and modern soul are booked for weddings, Christmas parties, awards nights and big birthdays, because grandparents and twenty-somethings will both know the songs and both want to dance.

Whether your event is near the City, Kensington and Richmond or elsewhere in London, the bands on this page cover the whole area. Local venues include Fulham Palace, Eltham Palace and Grand Connaught Rooms — if you're still choosing, it's worth asking where a band would set up and whether there's a sound limiter.

Within funk and soul there's a real choice: sixties Motown and Stax, seventies funk and disco, eighties soul-pop, or current soul and neo-soul. Most bands move between these across the night, but each has its own emphasis, and their song lists show it clearly.

Hireaband has been booking live music since 1999. Every funk and soul band here travels to London as standard, brings its own PA and lighting, and the quote you receive includes travel — use the instant quote button on this page to check prices and availability for your date.

The essentials:

  • Typical cost: from around £1,000 for a smaller line-up to £3,500 or more for a large band with horns, depending on date and set times
  • Line-ups from four-piece bands to eight or nine-piece bands with a full horn section
  • Two live sets plus a DJ playlist between and after sets as standard with most bands
  • Travel, PA and lighting are included in every quote
  • Every booking carries a 14-day change-of-mind refund

Guest numbers and the size of the room decide most of it. A five-piece is the most popular choice and suits most weddings and parties. For a large ballroom or a crowd of 200 or more, a seven to nine-piece with horns and backing vocals fills the space properly. Tell us the venue and numbers and we'll suggest what tends to work.

Most funk and soul bookings fall between about £1,000 and £3,500. The number of musicians is the biggest factor, especially horns and extra singers, followed by the date — Saturdays in summer and December are the busiest. Travel is included in the quote, so the figure you're given is the figure you pay.

Each funk and soul band's page carries real live video, audio, a set list and reviews from previous clients. A couple of clips will tell you far more about how a band works a dance floor than any description can.

Enter your date and venue in the instant quote button for live pricing and availability. After you book, we look after the contract, deposit and details, and keep in touch right up to the event. You also get a 14-day change-of-mind refund and an emergency contact number to use on the day.

FAQs

The songs cross generations. Motown, disco and soul classics are recognised by almost every guest, so a funk and soul band gets people of all ages onto the dance floor — which is why it's one of the most popular choices for weddings and company parties.

Expect Motown and Stax classics, seventies funk and disco from acts like Chic, Stevie Wonder and Earth, Wind & Fire, and soul-pop hits right up to the present day. Each band's page lists its full repertoire, and most will learn a first-dance or special request with enough notice.

If the room and budget allow, yes — saxophone and trumpet are what give funk and soul its punch. For smaller venues, a four or five-piece with strong vocals still delivers the songs well, and some bands can add horns just for the main sets.

Yes. Bands bring their own PA, lighting and usually a DJ playlist for between sets. They'll need floor space for the line-up and power sockets nearby, so it's worth checking both with your venue in London, along with any sound limiter.

From around £1,000 for a smaller line-up to £3,500 or more for a large band with horns. The number of musicians and the date make the biggest difference, and travel is always included in the quote.

Most play two 60-minute or three 40-minute sets during the evening, with a playlist between sets and after the band finishes. Many also offer an extra acoustic set or a later finish if you need it.

“Here at the Fox we threw a big party with Hot Piece of Brass as the main attraction. We knew it would be a great night, but we definitely didn't expect the huge turnout they brought with them. The dancefloor was packed all night and the band kept everyone going for hours. They were a pleasure to work with and a great band to get people in the party spirit!””

“Thanks for performing at my birthday party last week, you guys were totally awesome. As you were aware, everybody was up dancing for so much of the night, a few embarrassed friends are still recovering from their behaviour! I had such a fantastic night and it would never have been the same without your band playing. So many friends have asked about you, more business I’m sure.”

““Despite the adverse weather conditions (snow and ice) The Royal Valentines turned up promptly, set up efficiently and gave a fabulous high quality performance with great music We really enjoyed the evening and dancing. The audience was mixed ages from 20 to 70+ but everyone knew the songs and were very happy with the selection and the performance The musicians were of a very high standard and it was great to have live music”

“We had 44th Street for my husband's 40th Birthday last weekend after having booked them for my own 40th back in September. They were absolutely amazing both times - the guests loved them judging by the continuously packed dance floor and the fact many asked about how we found them. They created the very best atmosphere and made it a memorable and special night!”

(5)

“The Tommy Guns blew everyone away! They just kept smashing out banger after banger - no one left the dance floor the whole night! They also did a great job of mixing it up for a spread of generations - starting with more classic rock stuff then transitioning to more contemporary as the night went on.
Would highly highly recommend them to anyone!”

“I have put on quite a few events of this kind with different acts and may I say that you demonstrated exemplary standards of management and performance when working together on this occasion. This consistency and reliability has made my job of putting on the show a whole lot easier. As well as the fantastic show , you were all highly presentable and courteous and you were able to accommodate my requests efficiently.”
