Room size and the shape of the evening both matter. A four or five-piece suits most hotel function suites comfortably, giving enough sound to fill a dance floor once the formal part of the evening is over. A larger conference venue or ballroom carries a six to eight-piece easily, with brass or an extra vocalist adding weight for a bigger room.
