Pengenna Manor sits in a valley of its own at Trelill, in the countryside behind Wadebridge, and it has the rare quality of being completely unoverlooked: more than 300 acres of Cornish farmland and woodland with a 450-year-old family home at the centre. The manor is still a home, which you can feel in the way the rooms are put together, and the buildings around it have been restored rather than converted out of recognition. The Cowyard Barn and the Stables are both a couple of centuries old and both still look it, in the best possible way.
What Pengenna does better than almost anywhere is choice. There are nine licensed ceremony spaces, which is an almost absurd number for one estate: the Summerhouse seats 150 with the valley behind it, the Cowyard Barn takes 120 indoors, there is a spot under the archway at the manor entrance for 80 and the Rose Arbour in the walled garden for another 80, the Stables hold 65, and the Drawing Room inside the manor suits an intimate 20. That flexibility carries on through the day, with the Walled Garden, the Cowyard and the Drinks Terrace all working for a reception, the last of them taking upwards of 200.
Numbers run from a two-person elopement all the way up to 350 with a marquee, and the venue keeps a list of tent suppliers it trusts for the bigger end of that. The Cowyard Barn seats 100 for dinner year-round and the Stables 32. Accommodation on site sleeps 16, honeymoon suite included, and there is a licensed bar, a dancefloor and a coordinator who stays with you from the first walk-round to the end of the night. Catering is either bespoke and in-house or from a list of approved partners.
Where the band plays
For most weddings here the Cowyard Barn is the room — rustic, beamed and the right size for a band to feel close to the crowd rather than announcing itself from a distance. If your numbers push you into a marquee instead, you gain space and freedom but you will want to talk to the tent supplier about a solid stage area and power supply early on, because those two decisions affect one another. Either way, live music and DJs are both welcome, and fireworks are permitted too, which tells you something about how gloriously remote this valley is.
The last hour
Evenings run to around midnight, so there is room for a proper long night: two sets from a band, a breather at the bar or by the fire, and a final push before the lights come up. As ever with a manor that has bedrooms above the party, it is sensible to confirm when live music itself has to stop, as that can fall a touch earlier than the bar. Access is good — the lanes are Cornish, but the courtyard takes a van easily and there is parking on site.
