Chalk Farm sits at the foot of the South Downs at Willingdon, on the northern edge of Eastbourne, and it is a 17th-century farmhouse long before it is a hotel. Low ceilings, blackened oak beams, thick walls and rooms that have clearly grown by addition over three or four centuries: it has the kind of character no amount of refurbishment can manufacture. It is also, so the story goes, the farm George Orwell had in mind when he wrote Animal Farm, and the hotel keeps a lounge named for him with the memorabilia to match.
There are 8 en-suite bedrooms, several of them with the original beams still running overhead, and landscaped gardens outside that make the most of the Downs rising behind. The restaurant works through the week — proper breakfasts, lunches, cream teas, Sunday roasts — which means the kitchen is used to feeding people well rather than only on wedding Saturdays. Polegate station is about a mile away and the A22 and A27 are both close, so guests travelling from London or along the coast have an easy time of it, and the South Downs National Park starts more or less at the garden gate.
What makes it work for a wedding is the scale. The whole hotel becomes yours for the day, which at this size means genuinely yours — the bar, the lounges, the gardens, the lot. It is licensed for civil ceremonies indoors for a smaller gathering of around 40, with outdoor blessings in the garden seating up to 95; the wedding breakfast seats somewhere around 46 and the evening reception, whether that is a barbecue, a buffet or something grander, takes up to 95. Nothing is sold as a fixed package, so the day is put together around what you actually want.
Where the band plays
This is an intimate venue and the music should match it. An oak-beamed room with a low ceiling flatters an acoustic duo, a jazz trio or a compact four-piece far more than it does a full brass section, and at this scale a band that can play a quieter first set over dinner and then lift the room after the cake earns its fee twice over. The gardens open up another option altogether for a summer wedding, with a marquee or a covered corner giving a larger line-up the room it needs.
The shape of the evening
With 8 bedrooms upstairs and a village around you, the finish time is something to settle with the hotel early rather than assume, and it will shape the running order more here than at a larger venue. A single long set after dinner often works better than two short ones in a room this size, keeping the energy up while people move between the bar, the gardens and the dancefloor. Load-in is level and close to the parking, and the hotel is well used to bringing in DJs, photo booths and entertainers alongside its own team.
