Brighton College was founded in 1845 as the first Victorian public school in Sussex, and it very nearly ended up somewhere else entirely — the founder asked for the Royal Pavilion and was turned down by Queen Victoria, so it was built in Kemptown instead, a few streets back from the sea. Sir George Gilbert Scott drew the earliest buildings between 1848 and 1866 in gothic revival flint with Caen stone dressings. Sir Thomas Graham Jackson, an old boy of the school, added to them in the 1880s and again in the 1920s in brick and flint with cream and pink terracotta. The result is a quad that looks rather like an Oxford college that has wandered down to the coast.
The school has not stopped building, either. The 2020 School of Science and Sport, by the Rotterdam practice OMA, won a RIBA award, and the Richard Cairns Building opened in 2024 with a 400-seat theatre. Old and new sit together across immaculate grounds with the sea beyond the rooftops, which gives photographs a range most venues cannot offer: gothic stone one minute, clean modern lines the next, the beach a short walk away.
For weddings the college hands over the whole site for the day. The Hordern Room, with its grand high ceilings and space around the guests, takes civil ceremonies; the Victorian chapel, with its exquisite stained glass, holds an episcopal licence for weddings and makes an extraordinary setting for a service or a blessing. The Quad is where drinks and photographs happen, the Dining Room and the Great Hall are the two options for the wedding breakfast, seating up to 156, and the Smith Café offers something more intimate. Up to 250 can come for the evening. Everything sits within the walls, which makes for an unusually private and self-contained day.
Where the band plays
The Great Hall is the obvious room for a band and it is a generous one, with height above and room for a proper stage and dancefloor without the two crowding each other. Big halls with hard floors and tall windows are naturally reverberant, so a band bringing their own PA and someone to mix it will sound markedly better than one simply plugging in. For a smaller evening the Smith Café changes the brief and asks for something more like a trio.
The quad, the chapel and the drinks hour
The Quad is one of the great drinks-hour spaces in Brighton, enclosed, handsome and open to the sky, and acoustic music out there is a delight — stone on four sides carries a guitar or a string quartet beautifully with no amplification at all. Moving guests from chapel to quad to hall takes minutes and no transport, which keeps the afternoon relaxed.
The shape of the evening
This is a working school, so both the dates available and the finish time are things to establish at the very first conversation rather than assume; they will shape the running order and the band’s set times more than anything else. Once that is settled the structure looks familiar — dinner, speeches, first dance, two sets with a break for the cake — and with the whole site to yourselves there is no other event to work around. Ask about load-in and parking early too, since city school sites usually have a preferred route in.
