Albert Cottage was once part of Queen Victoria’s Osborne estate, and it still shares a boundary with the grounds of Osborne House itself. The name undersells it considerably: this is a substantial listed villa with the confident proportions of a royal outbuilding, which is precisely what it was, and it comes with 2 acres of private gardens, lawn and patio, screened well enough that you would never guess East Cowes was on the other side of the wall.
It works now as a boutique hotel with 10 individually decorated en-suite bedrooms, among them a luxury suite that doubles as the bridal suite, so the couple and the closest of the party can stay in the building and nobody is driving anywhere at the end of the night. There is a restaurant and bar on site and the catering is done in house, which simplifies a great deal: one conversation, one team, one invoice, and a kitchen that knows exactly which rooms it is feeding.
The house is licensed for civil ceremonies, and the usual shape of a day runs from a ceremony indoors or out on the lawn to drinks in the gardens and then a seated wedding breakfast for up to 90, with up to 120 joining for the evening. Exclusive use is available if you would like the whole place to yourselves, and there is room in the grounds for a marquee or a tipi if you would rather take the party outside. Where the band plays
Because this is a country house rather than a purpose-built function room, a band works best set up at one end of the main reception room with the dancefloor in front of it and the garden doors close at hand for anyone who needs air. There is an in-house dancefloor and sound system, handy for speeches and background music and giving a DJ something to plug into, though a full band will bring its own PA. The scale of the rooms suits a three- or four-piece particularly well — big enough to fill the space, compact enough not to swallow it — and an acoustic set out in the garden during drinks is lovely here on a warm afternoon.
How the evening runs
Evenings run to around midnight, which for most couples means the band’s second set finishing while the room is still busy and the bar taking care of the stragglers afterwards. The hotel sits in a residential part of East Cowes with houses nearby, so if you are planning a loud finish or anything outdoors after dark, confirm the music arrangements with the hotel when you book rather than assuming.
Parking and getting there
There is parking on site and a level approach for load-in, both of which make a band’s evening start calmly. East Cowes is the Island end of the Southampton car ferry, so guests and suppliers crossing with a vehicle arrive practically at the door — which makes this one of the most convenient venues on the Isle of Wight for anyone travelling over for the day and back again the same night.
