Vaulty Manor stands in its own fields at Goldhanger, a few minutes from Maldon and close enough to the Blackwater that couples routinely slip off for photographs on the shore and the causeway out towards Osea Island. The manor house at the centre of it is Grade II listed and genuinely old — parts of it are reckoned to go back some 800 years — and it has been restored with a light touch, period details left where they belong and comfort quietly added around them. It is family owned and family run, with roots on the farm going back generations, and that shows in the way you are looked after.
The barn is the showpiece. Built in the 17th century and beautifully kept, it is a great light oak Essex barn with vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and views straight out over the fields. Ceremonies take place in its oldest section, which has the sort of atmosphere no amount of styling can manufacture, while the breakfast barn sits at the centre of the courtyard for dinner. Outside there is a licensed pergola in the gardens for couples who would rather marry in the open air, with room for up to 200, and a walled garden and fairy-lit walkway for drinks and the slow, gossipy middle of the afternoon.
Everything on the plate is cooked on site by the resident head chef, locally and sustainably sourced, with the kitchen happy to work around vegetarian, vegan and allergen requirements rather than treating them as an afterthought. Hire is exclusive: the whole estate and its 12 acres belong to you for the day. So does the accommodation, which sleeps up to 57 across the Manor House, the courtyard rooms, Vaulty Cottage and a private wedding suite for the couple — enough that the party can carry on over breakfast the next morning.
Where a band sets up
A barn like this is a gift to live music. Vaulted timber roofs give a band room to breathe, and the natural warmth of old oak and hardwood floors flatters brass, strings and vocals in a way a modern function room never quite manages. The courtyard layout helps too — the dancing space, the bar and the outdoor terrace sit close together, so people can drift between a loud room, a drink and a bit of fresh air without ever really leaving the party. With everything at ground level around a courtyard, getting instruments and PA in is generally a straightforward business, though it is always worth asking where the team prefers vehicles to come in on the day.
How the evening unfolds
Guests can arrive from mid-morning, so the day has a generous, unhurried shape to it: vows in the old barn, drinks in the walled garden, dinner, speeches, and then the room turned over for dancing. Celebrations here typically run through to around midnight, which gives a band two comfortable sets with time for a final singalong before the lights come up — and with so many guests sleeping on site, the crowd at the end of the night tends to be nearly as big as the one at the start. Anything you are planning outdoors after dark, music included, is worth raising early so it can be built into the plan.
