The Wood Norton may be the most surprising house in Worcestershire. The estate was bought in 1872 as hunting ground for the exiled Duc d’Aumale, and it was the Duc d’Orléans who inherited it, finished the hall and by 1898 was running it as a miniature palace with liveried footmen and a full household of servants. In 1907 Princess Louise of Orléans married Prince Charles of Bourbon here in front of half the crowned heads of Europe, the King of Spain and the Queen of Portugal among the guests — which is a rather good pedigree for a wedding venue to be able to claim.
The family left in 1912 and the house went on to have an extraordinary second life. The BBC bought it in 1939 and within a year it was one of the largest broadcasting centres in Europe, home to the wartime Monitoring Service and later to the Engineering Training Department, and every so often to a location crew filming Doctor Who. It was sold in 1980 and became a country house hotel, and the present owners have been restoring it steadily since 2012.
What all of that leaves is a Grade II listed mansion full of majestic oak panelling and finely carved detail, standing in its own grounds on the Cotswold edge with the Bredon Hills in view. There are 50 individually designed bedrooms, so a full house is genuinely achievable rather than aspirational, parking is plentiful, and couples can take exclusive use of the hotel, its reception rooms and its gardens, subject to booking a minimum number of rooms.
Where the band plays
The Orangery is the heart of the day, holding up to 120 for the wedding breakfast before the evening opens out to 180 — a good size for a band, big enough to feel like an event and small enough that the dancefloor never looks stranded. Glass rooms are bright and reflective by nature, so it is worth agreeing the layout in advance and giving the band a corner rather than the middle of a walkway. For a smaller celebration the Fleur de Lys dining room, all panelling and quiet grandeur, makes a warmer and more contained room to play.
Ceremonies indoors and out
The house is fully licensed for civil ceremonies and there is a real choice of where to hold yours. The outdoor Wedding Pavilion seats up to 120 in the grounds, the Balustrade gives you the gardens and the view as a backdrop, and the Orangery or the Fleur de Lys room will take it indoors if the sky turns. Drinks afterwards belong on the terrace and the lawns, with the panelled reception rooms waiting inside for the moment the light goes.
How the evening runs
Because the hotel agrees timings with each couple as part of the booking, settle the music finish and the bar early and pass both straight to your band — it makes the difference between a last set that lands and one that gets cut short. The great advantage here is the 50 bedrooms: nobody is watching the clock for a taxi, so the room stays full to the end and the party carries on being a party rather than gradually turning into a departure lounge.
