There has been a mill on this stretch of water at Alveley, just outside Bridgnorth, for centuries. By 1770 New Mill was a small square building with 1 wheel and 2 sets of stones, and the miller had put up a house beside the pond; by the 1860s there were stables, a cow house, a barn and a pigsty around it, and before the century was out Robert Clarke was running the mill and a bakery, selling flour and bread at the gate. In 1967 the whole site became a hotel, with the waterwheel kept visible behind glass and a bar built up out of the old grinding stones.
That hotel closed in 2014, and in May 2015 a fire took almost everything — more than 80 firefighters attended, and the wheel itself was left too brittle to save. The site went to auction that July, and what has grown on it since is three oak-framed barns standing in 8 acres of gardens, terraces and water. It is, if you like that sort of thing, and you should, a thoroughly happy ending.
Guests arrive across a footbridge into the Mill Stone Barn, which is where the drinks reception gathers while the photographs are being taken. Vows are exchanged in the Mill Wheel Barn, all exposed timber and a great glazed wall looking straight out over the Mill Pond, or outside on the licensed terrace when the weather plays along; either way the room seats up to 170. The Mill Pond Barn takes the wedding breakfast and then the evening. There are 22 bedrooms on site, the Waterscapes suite comes with the hire, breakfast is served in the Granary the morning after, the cooking is done in-house, and there is no corkage on daytime drinks — a rarer kindness than it sounds.
Where the band plays
The Mill Pond Barn is built for this. There is a stylish bar down one side, an oak-sprung dancefloor, and a stage that is genuinely band-ready rather than a corner someone has cleared of chairs. The venue runs its own sound system, tuned with a dynamic limiter set at around 96dB, and performers plug into it by XLR rather than bringing a PA of their own, so tell your band early: in-ear monitors are the order of the day here rather than floor wedges, acoustic kits are welcome, and modest backline travels better than a stack. Stage lighting is worth bringing. Load-in is about as easy as barn venues get, straight from the rear staff car park onto the stage.
How the evening runs
Exclusive use runs from 11am right through to midnight, which is also when the music stops, so the last set lands with the room still full instead of trailing away. Power goes off shortly afterwards and pack-down is finished within the half hour, which in practice means a band that travels light will be loaded and away while your guests are still saying goodnight on the footbridge. Public liability cover and PAT certificates are checked in advance, so it is worth gathering that paperwork when you book rather than in the last fortnight.
