The Granary Estates is what happens when two 18th-century flint barns are restored properly and then joined by a glass walkway. It sits at Parsonage Farm just outside Woodditton, about five minutes from Newmarket and surrounded by cornfields, and it has spent more than a decade collecting awards for the way it does weddings. The flintwork is the thing you notice first — that knapped, silvery East Anglian stone that changes colour depending on the weather — and then the beams inside, original and enormous, holding up a roof that seems far too grand for a building that once stored grain.
The two barns give you real flexibility. The smaller Flint Barn is intimate and full of character, taking around 88 for a ceremony, while the main Granary Barn is the grand one, seating up to 175 for the wedding breakfast and holding 240 in the evening. Between them lies a private courtyard, manicured and planted for the seasons, with a set of vintage stables along one side; it takes around 120 for an outdoor ceremony and does excellent service for drinks and canapés in between. Beyond that there is a pond, and beyond that just farmland.
Couples bring in their own caterers here, which is either a joy or a job depending on your temperament, and the in-house planning team is there from booking to last orders to make sure it is the former. There is on-site accommodation in the Granary lodges and cottages, and a recently renovated Meadow Cottage set aside purely as a getting-ready space, complete with lit vanity mirrors and proper makeup chairs. The venue also runs a prop shop for draping, fairy lights, candles and easels, which saves a great deal of hunting about on the internet at midnight.
Where the band plays
The Granary Barn is the room to aim for. It is big, it is high, and the timber absorbs just enough to stop a band sounding harsh — a five or six-piece can open up in there without the sound turning to soup. Most couples put the band at the far end with the dancefloor in front and leave the glass walkway and the Flint Barn as the quieter end of the evening, so guests who want to talk have somewhere to go. Access for load-in is good, with the private car park close by; guests can leave cars overnight and collect them the next morning.
How the evening runs
The shape of the night is a familiar and satisfying one: ceremony in a barn or out in the courtyard, drinks among the flowers, dinner under the beams, then the lights down and the band on. Evenings here typically run to around midnight, so a band can play right through the heart of the party rather than finishing while people still have energy left. Bar hours and the exact finishing time are worth pinning down with the team when you book, since the licensed bar and the music can work to slightly different clocks. One small thing to know: confetti is an indoor affair only.
