Gorwell Farm occupies a private valley in the hills above Abbotsbury, tucked out of sight between Weymouth and the Chesil coast, and getting there involves a lane that narrows, dips and then opens out onto somewhere you would not have guessed was there. It is a working farm, and the barn at the centre of it is a handsome 17th-century stone building, thick-walled and generous, now fitted with underfloor heating, a bar, a proper kitchen for caterers and a south-facing terrace that catches the afternoon. Around it there are landscaped grounds, a grassy courtyard and bluebell woods that are worth timing a spring wedding around.
The barn seats 130 for dinner and takes up to 160 in the evening, and it is licensed for ceremonies, as is a pagoda set among the trees for couples who want to marry outdoors. The approach here is refreshingly relaxed: the family will happily recommend caterers, marquee companies and local suppliers, or leave you entirely to your own devices if you have your own ideas, and there is no corkage on drink you bring yourself. Holiday cottages on the farm sleep at least 18, so the wedding party can wake up where the party was, and there is on-site parking, accessible facilities and a welcome for dogs. What people tend to remember about Gorwell, though, is the privacy: for the duration of the wedding the valley belongs to you, and the only traffic noise is the wind coming over the ridge.

The barn is a single long room with a defined area for dancing, which makes the decision easy: the band goes at one end, the tables fill the rest, and the floor clears after dinner. Stone and timber give the sound a warm, contained quality, and with the barn holding 130 at dinner a four or five-piece has plenty of presence without having to push the volume. Because so many guests are staying in the cottages or nearby, the room stays full to the last song rather than emptying as transport arrives — and it is worth booking that transport early, since the lane down to Abbotsbury is not one you want to be arranging taxis for at 11pm. Load-in is easy, with vehicles able to come right up to the barn doors, and the flexibility the farm gives its suppliers means a band can be set up and checked long before the first guest arrives.
