Tewinbury is a working farm first and a wedding venue second, and that order of priorities is exactly why people love it. The same family have farmed these 700 acres in the Mimram valley since 1931, turning what was a dairy operation into a hotel, a restaurant and an events business without ever quite letting go of the farm underneath. The River Mimram runs through the middle of it, the land rolls gently away on both sides, and the buildings are the honest brick-and-timber sort that were put up to do a job.
The Tythe Barn is the room most couples come for. It is warm and characterful rather than showy — exposed beams, soft light, a mezzanine balcony looking down over the floor — and its large doors swing open onto riverside lawns, so drinks, croquet and the general drift of the afternoon happen outside whenever the weather plays along. It holds up to 160 for a ceremony and a wedding breakfast, rising to 250 for the evening, and you have exclusive use of it for the day. If you want something different in character there is the Kingsbridge Estate, a private house with its own gardens and fields and space for a marquee, and Tewin Water, a woodland and meadow setting for couples who want the whole thing to feel more like a festival than a formal do.
Food is the other thing they are serious about. The Cowshed restaurant and the Granary Kitchen run on seasonal, homegrown and local produce, and wedding menus stretch from three courses served properly to sharing boards, hog roast, barbecue and wood-fired pizza, with horsebox bars out in the gardens. There are 53 bedrooms across the estate sleeping 106 people in total, and they are not the usual identikit hotel rooms — farmhouse rooms and converted barn bedrooms, woodland and shepherd’s huts, lakeside lodges and lake huts with outdoor tubs. Ceremonies are licensed indoors and out, in the barn, the walled gardens, the lawns or down by the river.
Where the band plays
The Tythe Barn is built for the evening as much as the meal. With 250 in the room at the peak of the night it takes a proper band comfortably, the beams and timber flatter live sound, and the mezzanine gives everyone who has decided they are done dancing somewhere to sit and watch the people who haven’t. Tewinbury runs its own live music nights through the year, so a band arriving with a van full of kit is familiar territory here rather than a special request.
How the evening runs
Days here tend to be unhurried. Ceremony in the barn or beside the river, drinks on the lawns while the light drops over the valley, a long dinner, then the doors close, the lights come down and the room turns into a party. Because so many guests are sleeping on the estate, in a hut or a lodge a few minutes’ walk away, the dancefloor holds up far better in the final hour than it does at a venue everyone has to drive home from. The farm doesn’t publish a fixed music curfew, so it is worth confirming the finish time and any sound limit when you book, and letting your band plan the last set around it.
