Tankersley Manor sits high on the ridge between Barnsley and Sheffield, with the Trans Pennine Trail running past and long views out towards the Peak District. The oldest part of the building is 17th century and Grade II listed, and it has kept everything you would hope for — heavy oak beams, exposed stone walls, deep York stone window sills — while a modern hotel has grown around it with a spa, a swimming pool and enough bedrooms to sleep 350 people. It is a rare combination: genuine old-Yorkshire character on one side, and the scale to host a really big family on the other.
That scale is the headline. The Tankersley Suite seats 250 for a wedding breakfast and takes up to 350 standing in the evening, with its own private entrance, a lounge bar and a terrace attached, so a large wedding never has to share a corridor with the rest of the hotel. If your numbers are smaller, the Pennine Suite handles 65 for dinner and around 100 later, again with a private bar and terrace of its own. And for the most intimate weddings there is Crook Barn, a lovely low room of beams and stonework that feels a world away from the bigger suites.
The kitchen is used to catering across traditions, with vegan, halal, kosher, Asian and barbecue menus all on the table, and the hotel takes a relaxed, practical approach to the things couples usually have to argue about — live music, discos and fireworks are all welcome, there is a honeymoon suite, and there is parking on site for everybody. A wedding coordinator works with you either from a package or from a blank page, whichever suits.
Where the band plays
The Tankersley Suite is one of the more band-friendly rooms in South Yorkshire simply because of its size and its shape: there is room for a full line-up with brass, a big dancefloor and 300 guests without anyone being stuck behind a pillar, and the lounge bar next door keeps people close rather than scattering them across a hotel. Its private entrance is a real practical bonus for load-in. In Crook Barn, by contrast, scale the music down — an acoustic act or a trio will fill that room beautifully, where a full band would overwhelm it.
The shape of the evening
Ceremony, drinks on the terrace looking out over the countryside, dinner in the suite, then the room reset for the evening while everyone heads to the bar: it is a well-oiled routine here, and the team keep it moving. With hundreds of beds upstairs, hardly anyone leaves early, so a band can expect a full floor for both sets and a proper singalong at the end. Ask the coordinator to confirm the time amplified music must finish and whether a limiter is in use, then build your running order back from that.
