South Causey sits on Beamish Burn Road outside Stanley, looking down over the Beamish valley, and it has grown over the years into something far more interesting than the word “inn” suggests. There are now four distinct venues on the site — The Old Barn, The Farmhouse, the Durham Suite and the Beamish Barn — each with its own character, which means two weddings held here a fortnight apart can look and feel like entirely different occasions.
The Old Barn is the one most couples picture: rustic beams overhead, sweeping views down the valley, and set apart from the main hotel so that a wedding feels private and self-contained rather than folded into a working inn. It takes up to 200 guests. Ceremonies happen in the St Cuthbert’s Suite, and the Valley View Bar handles the pre-dinner drinks, which means the day moves through three distinct spaces without anybody having to leave the site. St Cuthbert’s Suite is an indoor ceremony space where an unamplified acoustic act is plenty — a guitarist, a harpist or a string trio needs nothing more than the room. Outside in the gardens, with the valley falling away in front of you, it is a different proposition: open country thins out unplugged instruments quickly, so a small PA is worth having. The Valley View Bar and the gardens together make the drinks hour a naturally scattered affair, which is where a roaming acoustic player does more good than a stage.
How the evening runs
Live music tends to finish around 11pm, which makes the timings worth planning properly. Keep the speeches to time, start the dancing promptly after dinner, and the band will get two full sets in front of a busy room rather than one against the clock, with the bar and a DJ taking it from there. Load-in is easy by rural standards, with parking and vehicle access to the barn.
