Solberge Hall is a Georgian mansion standing in its own expansive estate near Newby Wiske, in the broad green country between the market towns of Thirsk and Northallerton. It has had a multi-million pound refurbishment and reopened as a dedicated wedding and events venue, and the result is a house that looks every inch the part from the driveway and is thoroughly modern once you are inside — a combination that is harder to pull off than it sounds.
The Vinery is the room everyone talks about. Light, glazed and opening onto a huge outdoor terrace, it looks straight out to the Hambleton Hills, and it is licensed for civil ceremonies as well as serving as the main celebration space. For something quieter there is the Drawing Room, and for couples who want their vows outside altogether the estate offers woodland handfasting ceremonies among the trees — a genuinely lovely alternative, and not one many venues can offer convincingly.
Accommodation runs from grand suites to classic en-suite rooms, each individually designed with Egyptian cotton linen and its own bathroom, and the rooms are held exclusively for wedding and event guests rather than let out to passing trade. The estate works on exclusive use, so the house, the terrace and the grounds are yours for the day. For guests travelling, the A1 is close by, with straightforward runs from Newcastle, Leeds and further south, which makes it far more accessible than its rural setting suggests.
Where the band plays
The Vinery is the natural home for a band, and its glazing is the thing to think about: glass is a bright, reflective surface, so a well-balanced act that plays with dynamics will sound considerably better in it than one relying on sheer volume. A four or five-piece is the right scale for the room. The huge terrace outside is a real asset during the day — an acoustic set out there with the Hambleton Hills behind is the kind of thing guests remember years later — and it doubles as the escape route for anyone who needs a breather once the dancing starts.
How the evening runs
Solberge Hall does not publish a finish time, and since the estate is taken exclusively the shape of the evening is agreed with the team rather than imposed. Settle it early all the same, because it decides how many sets you book and how relaxed the meal can be. The usual rhythm is a ceremony in the Vinery or out in the woodland, drinks on the terrace, dinner, and then the same space turned over for the evening.
Load-in is comfortable — a private estate with its own approach and parking — but as with most converted country houses it is worth confirming the route into the Vinery, the power supply and any sound restrictions before the day rather than on it.
