Rushpool Hall was built in 1863 and 1864 for John Bell, a local ironmaster, out of the Cleveland ironstone that made his fortune, and it has had one of the more eventful lives of any house in the North East. Arthur Dorman leased it, Sir Joseph Walton bought it, it spent time as a girls’ boarding school from 1946, became a hotel by the mid-1960s, reverted to a private residence, and opened for functions again in the late 1970s. Since 2020 it has been given over entirely to weddings, which suits it — the house was always meant for occasions.
It is Grade II* listed and sits in acres of its own grounds above Saltburn-by-the-Sea, with woodland, water and countryside on the doorstep and the coast close enough to work into the day. The building has the confident, slightly gothic silhouette of high Victorian money well spent, and the interiors have the scale to match.
The rooms divide the day up nicely. The Ballroom is the light-filled heart of it for ceremonies and the wedding breakfast, taking up to 110; the Peacock Room handles smaller, more intimate gatherings; the Pavilion, a domed structure in the grounds, is licensed for outdoor ceremonies; and the Undercroft is a dedicated evening party space with its own fully stocked bar, holding up to 240. There are 18 bedrooms sleeping as many as 40, a honeymoon suite included in the packages, and exclusive use of the venue for every couple. Catering is in house for the wedding breakfast, though self-sufficient food trucks are welcome in the evening, which is a rather good idea at midnight.
Where the band plays
The Undercroft is the band’s room, and having a separate evening space is the best thing about how this house works. The band can load in and set up while the wedding breakfast is still going on upstairs, so when the doors open the room is ready, lit and sound checked rather than half-built. Live music and discos are both permitted. With capacity for 240 there is scope for a full line-up, and an undercroft’s solid walls and lower ceiling make for a close, loud, properly atmospheric party.
How the evening runs
The hall does not publish a fixed curfew, so agree it with the team as part of the exclusive-use booking — with a dedicated party space and its own bar, there is every reason to want the evening to run on. Access to the getting-ready room starts at 8am and decorating can begin from 9am on the day, which gives suppliers and a band plenty of room to work.
Load-in is via a country estate driveway with parking on site, so it is comfortable enough, but the Undercroft is below the main floor — worth having the band see the access route in advance if they are bringing a full backline down there.
