Mythe Barn sits on 150 acres of farmland where Leicestershire, Warwickshire and Staffordshire meet, looking out over rolling hills and meadows down towards the River Sence, with sheep grazing almost up to the buildings. It is a genuinely rural spot and it feels it: no passing traffic, no neighbouring function suite, just a cluster of converted barns arranged around a courtyard and a great deal of sky. Each space does a job. The Oak Barn is the grand one, two storeys high with full-height windows and exposed beams, licensed for civil ceremonies and seating 150 for the wedding breakfast. The Grain Store, with its neutral palette, oak beams, chandeliers and floor-to-ceiling windows, is the other big room and needs almost nothing doing to it. The Cart Barn and the Gallery take care of drinks and the getting-ready morning, and the Courtyard has an outdoor kitchen turning out wood-fired pizza, wok food and barbecue for couples who want the evening relaxed rather than formal.
Every wedding is exclusive use, so there is only ever one celebration on site. Seven en-suite bedrooms occupy the converted stables around the courtyard, with a honeymoon suite up in the Hayloft, and there is room in the evening for up to 200 once the wider circle arrives. It is dog friendly, garden games and props are on hand, and it has collected a shelf of regional awards over the past few years, which in a county as well supplied with barns as this one is no small thing.
Where the band plays
The Grain Store is where the evening lands: dance floor, bar and band together beneath the oak beams and the chandeliers, with the glass wall showing the last of the light going off the fields. It is a good, honest room for live music, with enough height for the sound to open out and enough glass and soft furnishing to stop it ringing. Bands and DJs can get in from 10am to set up, which is unusually generous and means everything can be rigged and sound-checked well before your guests arrive, rather than in the middle of the drinks reception.
The practical bits worth knowing
There is a noise limiter set at 95 decibels, which is a comfortable working level for a full band with a drummer so long as everybody knows about it in advance — pass the figure on when you book and any professional act will bring the right kit and set their levels accordingly. Music indoors runs through the day and into the evening; outdoors it stops at 8pm, so plan any acoustic set in the courtyard for the afternoon rather than after dinner. Your band or DJ will need PAT certificates and public liability insurance, which established acts carry as a matter of course. Parking is plentiful, cars can be left overnight and collected by 9am, and unloading is easy — all of which makes the day smoother for the musicians and, in the end, for you.
