Haughley Park is a proper Suffolk estate, and the great red-brick house at its centre was built around 1620 for the Sulyard family in the full-blooded Jacobean manner: tall chimneys, shaped gables, the lot. A fire gutted a good part of it in 1961 and the family had it restored within three years, which tells you something about how much the place is loved. The house itself stays private. What you hire is the estate’s magnificent timber-framed barn a short walk away through the grounds, with acres of landscaped garden and woodland around it and open countryside beyond.
The barn is the sort of building that makes decorating largely unnecessary. Oak frame, soaring vaulted roof, exposed beams overhead and a glass-fronted entrance hall that floods the whole thing with light, it manages to be rustic and rather grand at the same time. It is licensed for civil ceremonies of around 100 guests, seats 120 for the wedding breakfast and holds up to 240 in the evening, which gives you room to open the invitation out to the wider circle once dinner is done.
What really sets it apart is the length of the hire. A Saturday wedding gets the barn and grounds exclusively from 11am on the Friday until 11am on the Sunday, with the midweek equivalent running Tuesday to Thursday, so you can decorate in your own time, have everyone together the night before and clear up without a hungover dash. The Victorian farmhouse alongside sleeps 10 across 5 bedrooms. Catering comes from an approved supplier list, there is no corkage on daytime drinks so you can bring your own wine for the tables, and the evening runs on the venue’s bar. It sits centrally in the county just off the A14, which makes it unusually easy for guests coming from Cambridge, Ipswich or Stansted.
Where the band plays
The barn is the whole party: ceremony, dinner and dancing all happen under the same oak roof, with the tables cleared back after the speeches. Barns of this shape are kind to live music, since the timber soaks up just enough to stop the room ringing, and a band set up on the end wall reaches the far corners without having to push. There is comfortable space for a five- or six-piece, and the glass entrance hall gives musicians somewhere sensible to load in and stash their cases out of sight.
Running the evening late
Music and the bar both run until 12.30am here, which is generous by Suffolk standards and well worth planning around: it lets a band play two full sets with a proper gap for the cake and the evening food, and still leaves time for a DJ or a playlist to see the last hour out. Confetti needs to be biodegradable, confetti cannons are out, and fireworks are fine with a professional supplier. Parking is on site and the access is easy, so a band arriving in the late afternoon can be set up and sound-checked long before your guests come back in for dinner.
