Glewstone Court is a Grade II listed Georgian manor a few miles out of Ross-on-Wye, and it wears its age beautifully. Sash windows, wooden fireplaces, a spiral staircase that creaks in the right way, and an entrance hall floored in original Victorian mosaic tiling from the 1880s beneath a mahogany stair — none of it feels staged. The family who run it have given the house over to weddings since 2014, one couple at a time, and the whole place comes to you for a two-day hire rather than being shared with anyone else.
Outside, lawns fall away towards an apple orchard with the Wye Valley opening up beyond. The star of the garden is a Cedar of Lebanon planted around 1520, one of the oldest in Europe and quite the thing to be married beneath; couples who want an outdoor ceremony tend to choose either the shade of the cedar or the lower lawns. Indoors, the Drawing Room is licensed too, with its coffered ceiling and arched windows looking out over all of it. For a church wedding, St Matthews at Marstow is roughly a mile down the road.
Three reception rooms run into one another — the Drawing Room, the Morning Room and the Lounge — and together they seat up to 80 for the wedding breakfast, with the Drawing Room alone taking 70. Larger parties put a marquee on the lawn, which will seat as many as 150. Everything on the plate is cooked in the house’s own kitchen from seasonal Herefordshire produce, and there are tasting evenings beforehand so you are not choosing blind. Ten bedrooms sleep up to 30 guests, the Gainsborough Suite comes with the booking, and breakfast the next morning is one of the real pleasures of staying put.
Where the band plays
A Georgian house is a series of rooms rather than one great hall, and that shapes the evening rather nicely. With the interconnecting reception rooms opened up, a band plays to a room where everybody is genuinely close to the music — there is no back of the hall to get lost in — and an acoustic or smaller electric line-up suits the proportions well. Up to 130 join for the evening, so if you are bringing a bigger, brassier band it is worth walking the rooms on your visit and deciding with the team where the stage should go and how much of the floor you want to give over to dancing. How the evening unfolds
As dusk falls the Courtyard Bar opens through the French doors from the Drawing Room, the fires are lit and the party drifts naturally between the warm rooms and the walled courtyard outside. Celebrations run to 11pm as standard, with a midnight extension available if you would like one, so it is worth deciding early which you are planning for — it changes how you space the first dance, the evening food and the band’s sets, and the venue will happily talk it through.
