Fitzleroi Barn sits on a working farm at Fittleworth, just west of Pulborough and deep enough into the South Downs that the approach alone starts to slow you down. The same family have been running weddings here for more than 25 years, which in this business counts as a long institutional memory, and it shows in how unhurried the whole thing feels. The barn is timber-framed and has been restored with a genuinely light touch — the original structure left to speak for itself, everything added around it kept plain and modern, so the room reads as calm rather than themed.
There are four spaces to play with, and most days use all of them. The Main Barn is the heart of it, the Long Room gives you somewhere for drinks or a quieter overflow, the courtyard handles the hour between ceremony and dinner, and the meadow opens out into the countryside for outdoor vows and for photographs at that point in the evening when the light goes gold. The site is licensed for civil ceremonies, and celebrant-led and humanist services are equally welcome, so you are not boxed in to one shape of wedding.
The thing most couples end up valuing most is the hire itself: Fitzleroi is yours for two days, with exclusive access from the day before. That means flowers, place cards, a rehearsal and all the fiddly business of setting up happen without a clock running, and the morning of the wedding is about getting ready rather than putting out chairs. The Hayloft, a maisonette on site, gives the couple somewhere to prepare and somewhere to fall into afterwards. Catering comes from a list of recommended names or, by arrangement, someone of your own, and there is no corkage. Parking is effectively unlimited.
Where the band plays
The Main Barn is where the dancing happens, and its timber frame gives live music a warm, solid sound — big enough to carry a full band without being so cavernous that the sound wanders off. Around 120 sit for dinner and up to 180 can be in the room in the evening, which is a good size for a band: full enough to feel like an event, not so vast that the dancefloor gets lost. With two days on site, a band can usually get in and set up in good time rather than squeezing a soundcheck into a twenty-minute gap, and that alone tends to make for a better night.
How the evening unfolds
The licence carries you to around 11.45pm, with midnight the outside edge of things, so the back end of the day has a clear frame around it. Work back from there and you get a comfortable evening: first dance once the tables are cleared and the room has turned, two sets with a break for evening food, and a final song that lands while the floor is still crowded. Earlier on, the courtyard and the meadow both suit something gentler — an acoustic duo during drinks carries nicely outdoors and gives the day a musical through-line rather than one loud burst at the end.
