Fairyhill is a listed Georgian house tucked into 24 acres of woodland, lakes and gardens near Reynoldston, deep in the Gower peninsula and a short drive from Rhossili. For years it was known as one of the best restaurants in south Wales; it now belongs to the Oldwalls Collection, and the combination of the two things — an old house that takes its food seriously, run by people who do a great many weddings — turns out to be a very good one.
Inside the main house you get what you hope for from Georgian architecture: grand lounges, deep velvets, open fires and windows that look straight out into the trees. Alongside it stands the K Room, a contemporary glass-fronted building that does the heavy lifting for larger weddings, taking up to 150 for a ceremony and a reception with panoramic views across the woodland. The contrast works rather well — the intimacy and warmth of the old house for getting ready, drinks and photographs, and a bright modern room with a proper floor for the main event.
Up to 60 guests can stay: 12 bespoke suites in the main house including a honeymoon suite, 7 en-suite rooms in the K Room wing, a coach house sleeping 6, and rustic retreats nearby. The kitchen is led by executive chef Chris Keenan and the menus are multi-course, locally sourced affairs with chef-curated canapes during the drinks hour. The whole site is taken exclusively, so the woods, the lakes and the lawns are yours.
Where the band plays
The K Room is the obvious home for live music: it is the largest space, it was built as an event room rather than adapted into one, and its glass frontage means that once the sun goes down and the lighting comes up, a band on that floor looks properly cinematic. A four or five-piece suits 150 guests well. The Georgian rooms in the main house are lovely but are drawing rooms rather than dance floors — perfect for a jazz trio or a solo pianist during drinks and dinner, less so for anything with a drum kit.
The rhythm of the day
Fairyhill lends itself to a long, unhurried celebration: getting ready in the house, a ceremony in the K Room or out among the trees, drinks on the lawns, dinner, then dancing as the woodland disappears into the dark outside the glass. Because everyone staying is already on site, the room keeps its numbers well into the night. As with any venue set in open Gower countryside, there will be a finish time and rules about outdoor amplified music, so ask the team to confirm both for your date, and check whether live music stops any earlier than the bar does.
