Dodmoor House sits at Dodford, in a quiet corner of Northamptonshire a couple of miles from junction 16 of the M1, with the Grand Union Canal running along the edge of the grounds. Three connected Grade II listed barns form the heart of it, arranged around a central courtyard that the whole day keeps returning to — for drinks after the ceremony, for a gossip between courses, for that long golden stretch before the evening properly begins.
It is family-run and exclusively yours, and it has the easy confidence of a venue that knows precisely what it is good at. The Courtyard Barn takes ceremonies beneath exposed oak beams, with five sets of glass double doors that fold the courtyard into the room; the Catesby Barn, double height and hung with fairy lights, does dinner and then the dancing. Alongside them are two getting-ready rooms and a honeymoon suite, so the morning has somewhere to happen and the night has somewhere to end. Around 100 guests join you for the day and up to 180 come for the evening.
The eating and drinking is generous and unusually relaxed about the rules: a 90-minute drinks reception with no ceiling on it, two bars, evening waitress service, no corkage on daytime drinks if you would rather bring your own, and a choice between the recommended in-house caterers and someone you have found yourself. Four acres of courtyard, lawn and garden give a photographer plenty to work with, and dogs are always welcome, which tells you a good deal about the place.
Where the band plays
The Catesby Barn is the evening room, and its height is the thing. Double-height barns give live sound somewhere to go, so a band fills the space without anybody having to shout over it, and the fairy lights do half the work of dressing a stage for you. Since dinner and dancing share the room, the usual arrangement is for a band to set up before guests sit down, or to use the turnaround while everyone drifts out into the courtyard. It is worth talking the timings through early — the coordinator who comes with every wedding will have done it a hundred times.
How the evening runs
That courtyard is the secret weapon after dark: lit up, just a few steps from the dancing, so guests can flow between the two rather than having to choose. The bars run until midnight, so the last set lands with the room still full instead of dwindling away, and the barns stay warm and close all evening. Beyond the honeymoon suite there is no accommodation on site, though Dodmoor has arrangements with nearby hotels and transport is included — useful to know when you are working out how long you want the music to go on for.
