Craig y Nos is a genuine one-off. A Scots baronial castle built in the early 1840s to designs by Thomas Henry Wyatt, it stands high in the upper Swansea Valley near Pen-y-cae, with the Bannau Brycheiniog rising behind it and a country park spread below. What makes it extraordinary is what happened next: in 1878 it was bought by Adelina Patti, the most celebrated soprano of her age, who spent the rest of her life here and set about improving it on a scale that still astonishes visitors. She added wings, a clock tower, a conservatory and a winter garden — and, most remarkably, a private opera house.
That theatre survives, Grade I listed, with pale green and gold plasterwork, fluted columns, painted ceiling panels, a proscenium stage and Patti’s original painted backdrop still in place. Its floor was engineered to be raised flat for use as a ballroom or sloped towards the stage for performances, which is precisely the sort of detail that explains why people fall for this place. It seats up to 130. Beyond it, the Function Room takes around 150 and the Conservatory around 130, and the castle has bedrooms, so guests stay on.
The castle spent much of the 20th century as a hospital before returning to life as a hotel and wedding venue, and it has never entirely lost its faintly gothic reputation — ghost tours run here, and nobody seems to mind. Catering is in-house, dogs are welcome, and the Craig-y-nos country park at the gates gives photographers riverbank, woodland and mountain within a few minutes’ walk.
Playing in an opera house
Very few wedding venues anywhere hand a band a real Victorian theatre with a real stage, and it is worth planning around. The room was designed for unamplified singing, which means it carries sound beautifully and rewards a band that plays with some restraint rather than one that arrives ready to fill a barn. A four or five-piece on that stage, with the painted backdrop behind them and the floor raised level for dancing, is a sight and a sound that guests do not forget. Do speak to the castle early about what can and cannot be rigged in a Grade I listed theatre, and about how the floor is set for your date.
How the evening runs
Days here tend to sprawl comfortably: a ceremony in the theatre or the conservatory, drinks among the Victorian interiors or out towards the park, dinner, then the evening back in the theatre or the function room. With bedrooms in the castle and a remote valley outside, guests stay put and the party keeps its numbers. Ask the castle to confirm your finish time and any limits on volume in the listed rooms when you book, since a historic interior of this importance is treated carefully and for very good reason.
