Coworth Park is a Georgian country house sitting in 240 acres of Berkshire parkland on the edge of Ascot, a few minutes from Windsor Great Park and about 45 minutes from London. The Dorchester Collection restored it with a light but confident hand, so the mansion keeps its period proportions while the interiors are unmistakably modern, and the old stables and estate cottages have been turned into rooms without losing the shape of the yard. The grounds are the real luxury. The Oval Room is the largest, on the lower ground floor of the mansion with its own reception area and a private patio with steps up to the terraced gardens; it seats 100 for dinner and is, quite rightly, described as magical by candlelight. The Garden Room opens onto the gardens, the Oak Room has its own private entrance and ante-room, the Tower House brings drama and a view, and the upper level of the Barn works as a bar and dining room for a party. Ceremonies can be held outside in the meadow, the rose garden or the sunken garden, where the skies do a lot of the work.
Where the band plays
The Oval Room is the one to picture a band in. At around 117 square metres it holds 100 seated, or 70 for a dinner dance once the floor is cleared, which tells you something useful: this is a room for a polished four or five-piece rather than a ten-piece with a horn section. The upside is intimacy — nobody is watching the band from 40 feet away, and a good singer can work a room of that size properly. The private patio just outside is the natural escape valve between sets, and the staircase up to the gardens keeps people circulating rather than clustering by the door.
Ceremony, drinks and the shape of the evening
Most couples use the outdoors for the first half of the day — a ceremony in the meadow or the rose garden, drinks on the terrace — and then bring everything indoors for dinner and dancing. Acoustic music is lovely in that setting: a string trio or a solo guitarist during drinks, then the full band inside later. With the bedrooms on site, guests stay put and the dance floor keeps its numbers to the end of the night.
