Coed-y-Mwstwr

Coed-y-Mwstwr stands on a wooded hillside above Coychurch, just outside Bridgend, and the drive up through the trees is half the pleasure of arriving. The house is a Grade II listed Victorian mansion built in 1888, and it has the period bones to prove it — panelling, tall windows, vaulted ceilings in the older rooms — while the view from the front lawn runs clear across the Vale of Glamorgan and, on a bright day, all the way to the coast. It now also trades as The Coed, but the setting and the building are unchanged.

Three quite different spaces handle weddings here. The Hendre Suite is the largest, a flexible room with exposed beams that takes up to 180 and works as a blank canvas for whatever you want to do with it. The Elliott Suite sits within the original mansion, smaller and more elegant, with vaulted ceilings and garden views. And then there is the Folly, a glass pergola tucked into a secret garden, which is the venue’s party piece — a ceremony or a drinks reception out there, with the woods all around, is a lovely thing.

With 33 bedrooms, a restaurant and bar and gardens that wrap the house, the hotel handles the whole day and the night after it. It is licensed for civil marriages, sits minutes from the M4 and the A473, and is close enough to both Cardiff and Swansea to suit a guest list drawn from either.

Where the band plays

The Hendre Suite is where the evening ends up, and its exposed beams and generous footprint make it a genuinely good live-music room — tall enough not to box a band in, big enough at 180 to give you a crowd worth playing to, and plain enough in decoration that lighting does real work. The Elliott Suite is the better setting for dinner and speeches, or for a smaller wedding where an acoustic duo or a jazz trio suits the room far better than a full band would. The Folly and the gardens, meanwhile, are made for something unplugged during drinks.

The shape of the evening

Days here tend to follow the hillside: ceremony inside or in the secret garden, drinks on the terrace with that view, dinner, then everyone into the Hendre Suite as the light goes. Guests staying in the hotel means the room holds its numbers late, which is what makes the difference between a good second set and a thin one. As with any country hotel with bedrooms above the function rooms, there will be a finish time and a view on volume — worth confirming both with the events team when you book, and asking whether live music stops any earlier than the bar does. Parking is on site and the load-in from the car park to the suite is short and level.
