A few miles west of Cambridge, down the lanes at Dry Drayton, the Childerley estate keeps one of the more characterful wedding buildings in the county. Drinks come through the estate’s own lists, with the evening bar run either by your caterer or by the in-house team. Best of all, the barn is exclusively yours and you get access the day before, which turns dressing the room from a panicked morning into an enjoyable afternoon. There are no bedrooms on site, but Cambridge and the surrounding villages have plenty within a short drive.

In a barn this long the sensible arrangement is to put the band at one end with the dance floor in front of them, keeping the bar and the seating far enough away that people can still hear themselves talk. Timber frames and a high pitched roof make for a warm, generous sound, and the volume carries without needing to be pushed — a four or five-piece will fill the room happily, and a larger line-up has the floor space to spread out. Access is genuinely easy too, with the barn at ground level and the courtyard alongside, so instruments and PA come straight off the van and in through the doors.

Evenings at Childerley usually run to around midnight, which is a comfortable length for a band to play two sets with a DJ or playlist bridging the gaps and taking the party home. Given the rural setting and the fabric of an old barn, it is worth asking when you book whether live music needs to finish a little before the bar and whether any noise limit applies, so the band can build their timings around it. It is also sensible to arrange transport in advance, since taxis into the villages are best booked rather than hoped for at midnight.
