Barley Wood was built in 1801 for Hannah More, the writer, educator and campaigner who lived here with her four unmarried sisters and drew a constant stream of the great and the good up the hill to see her. It is an unusually happy house to inherit for a wedding: handsome without being grand, full of light, and set on the northern shoulder of the Mendips with the Yeo Valley falling away beneath it.
Around it lie some 11 acres of gardens, parkland and woodland, including formal Italian gardens that carry a listing of their own. Paths wind off through the trees, terraces catch the afternoon sun, and the views run for miles on a clear day—the sort of grounds that keep guests wandering happily between courses instead of hovering by the bar. Ceremonies are held indoors in the Morning Room or outdoors in the Italian gardens when the weather plays along, which leaves the afternoon free to drift across the terraces with drinks and something gentle in the background. Music runs until midnight, and having the whole site to yourselves means the band can be set up and sound-checked long before guests arrive rather than squeezed into a turnaround. Load-in is straightforward enough, though the lanes up from Wrington are narrow, so it is worth flagging a large vehicle in advance. Afterwards, with everyone sleeping on site or nearby and a Sunday morning still to come, nobody is watching the clock for a taxi—which is exactly why couples pick this place.
