Baddow Park House is a handsome Queen Anne residence set in parkland at Great Baddow, on the edge of Chelmsford but feeling comfortably lost in the countryside. It has been restored with real attention: the proportions, the light and the calm of a Georgian house are all intact, while everything you actually want on a wedding day — warmth, plumbing, bedrooms that people are pleased to be shown to — has been quietly brought up to date. The result is a private house that happens to host weddings, rather than a wedding venue that happens to occupy a house, and the difference is obvious the moment you walk in.
Inside, the Salon and the Drawing Room carry the more formal moments of the day, while the Orangery is the room couples tend to fall for — glazed, generous and unlike anything else in the county, it seats 120 on round tables or 150 banquet-style. Ceremonies can be held indoors for up to 150 or outside beneath a solid oak gazebo roofed in Welsh slate. The gardens and sweeping parkland are the other half of the venue, with a firepit for later in the evening and a log shed bar equipped with a barbecue and a pizza oven, which is exactly the kind of thing guests still talk about months afterwards. Only one wedding is ever hosted at a time, so the house, the grounds and the staff are entirely yours. There are 11 en-suite bedrooms with parkland views, including a honeymoon suite, sleeping upwards of 30, and the venue is set up for extended weekend weddings if you would rather not compress everything into a single day. Catering can come from the recommended suppliers or from a caterer you bring in yourself, which gives couples with a particular idea about food an unusual amount of freedom.
Where the band plays
The Orangery is the natural home for live music, holding 150 standing for the evening with the garden immediately outside for anyone who needs a breather between sets. Live bands are welcome here, and the house team will help you place the stage so the band has a proper end of the room and the dancefloor sits where the crowd already is. Because this is a period house in its own parkland rather than a purpose-built hall, it is worth walking the room with your band or the venue’s wedding manager beforehand to agree power, access and exactly where everything will stand.
How the night unfolds
Days here have a lovely lack of urgency — drinks on the lawns, dinner in the Orangery, then the doors open onto the firepit and the log shed bar while the room is turned around for dancing. The evening reception runs through to midnight, which gives a band two full sets and still leaves time for a last song everybody joins in with, and with 30 or so of your guests staying in the house, the end of the night rarely feels like an ending. One small note: fireworks are not permitted, so if you had a grand finale in mind, plan a musical one instead.
