Jazz Bands in Surrey

Hire live jazz in Surrey

A jazz band suits the parts of an event where people are talking as much as listening. Across Surrey, that means drinks after a wedding ceremony, a long dinner, a client reception or a summer party on the lawn, with standards, swing and bossa nova played at a level that lets conversation carry on underneath.

Whether your event is near Epsom, Farnham and Dorking or further afield, the jazz acts here cover the whole of Surrey. Local venues include Great Fosters, The Barn at Botley Hill and Royal Grammar School Guildford — if you're still choosing a venue, it's worth checking where the music will be set up.

Not every jazz band sounds the same. You'll find smooth lounge trios, gypsy jazz groups in the Django Reinhardt tradition, trad and New Orleans bands, Latin and bossa nova specialists, and acts who give chart songs a jazz treatment. It's worth deciding which mood you're after before comparing prices.

Hireaband has been booking live music since 1999. Every jazz act listed here travels to Surrey as standard, brings its own sound equipment where it's needed, and the quote you receive includes travel — use the instant quote button on this page to check pricing and availability for your date.

The essentials:

  • Typical cost: from around £500 for a jazz duo to £2,500 or more for a larger band, depending on line-up and date
  • Line-ups from solo pianist or duo through to a five or six-piece jazz band
  • Background sets for receptions and dinners, or livelier swing for dancing
  • Travel is included in every quote
  • Every booking carries a 14-day change-of-mind refund

Think about when the music will play. Background jazz during drinks or a meal works best with a smaller, acoustic line-up at a gentle volume. A later set for dancing needs more weight, so a quartet or quintet with drums and horns makes more sense. Some events book one act to cover both.

Most jazz bookings fall between about £500 and £2,500. The number of musicians is the biggest factor, followed by how long they play and the date — a Saturday in summer or December costs more than a weekday. Travel is included in the quote you receive, so the figure you're given is the figure you pay.

Each jazz act's page carries real video and audio, a song list and reviews from previous clients. Watching a couple of clips tells you far more about the feel of a band than any description can, so it's worth listening before you choose.

The instant quote button gives you a price and availability for your date straight away. From there, we manage the contract and deposit and keep you updated until the event. Every booking is covered by a 14-day change-of-mind refund, and there's an emergency contact line on the day in case anything needs sorting.

FAQs

Jazz works particularly well for wedding drinks receptions, corporate dinners, awards evenings, garden parties and milestone celebrations — anywhere you want live music that adds atmosphere without stopping conversation. Many acts can also play a livelier swing set later for dancing.

Yes. Most jazz acts are used to playing at a volume that lets guests talk comfortably, especially duos and trios. Tell the band the room and the purpose of each set, and they'll pitch the volume and repertoire to suit.

A trio is usually piano or guitar, double bass and vocals or a lead instrument — ideal for receptions and dinners. A quartet or quintet adds drums and often saxophone or trumpet for a fuller sound, and a larger band gives you the energy for a dance floor.

A duo or trio needs very little: a small corner of the room and, in some cases, a single power socket. Larger bands with drums and amplification need more floor space and power nearby, so it's worth checking with your venue in Surrey before booking.

From around £500 for a jazz duo to £2,500 or more for a larger band. The line-up, how long they play and the date make the biggest difference, and travel is always included in the quote.

Yes. Each act lists its repertoire, and most are happy to learn a special request with enough notice. If you have a style in mind — standards, gypsy jazz, bossa nova or swing — choose an act that specialises in it.

“For my 40th birthday last November, I wanted to re-create some swing style magic for myself and my friends. And with Gentlemen of the Road that's exactly what I got. The set list was awesome, and you can tell the band love what they do as the sound they produced was wonderful. I can't recommend them highly enough. Two long sets just wasn't enough! Thanks guys, we had an incredible evening.”

“We booked this band for a charity event. From first contact they were very positive and understanding of the type of evening we wanted, and they delivered exactly as promised. They play a lovely mix of music and are obviously very talented musicians. They offer a sophisticated repertoire of swing era music and we would highly recommend them for this type of occasion. They are also a very nice group of people.”

“Dear Mike, I know I thanked you on the night but just wanted to do so again in the cold light of day. You and your band were fantastic, not just brilliant at the music but also lovely, helpful and a total pleasure to work with.
Thank you so much and please pass my thanks on to your team.
My Mother literally had the party of her life and you were a big part of that.... you were exceptional.”

“Joe has played for us 5 times now and never fails to disappoint. He adds a fun & classy atmosphere to our bar every time he plays and our customers come down especially to see him play. Would highly recommend!”

“Many thanks Irving for finding such a brilliant band for us. The music really livened up the hall and everyone enjoyed the music. Despite the weather and having to move the event indoors, the band sounded wonderful in the great hall at Trinity Hall. It was a very memorable evening.”
