Upton Barn & Walled Garden sits in the countryside outside Cullompton in mid Devon, and the thing that comes through most strongly is how carefully it has been put back together. The farm buildings were restored using oak from the estate’s own trees and stone from a quarry on the land, and the light fittings and chandeliers were made by a local blacksmith — which is why the place feels rooted rather than styled. The same instinct runs through the running of it: biomass heating, borehole water, solar panels added a few years back and a firm preference for suppliers who live nearby.
There are four main spaces and they flow into one another rather neatly. The Walled Garden is the outdoor ceremony spot, lavender-lined with a hand-crafted oak arbour and the Blackdown Hills rising behind, and it seats up to 156. The Cider Barn handles ceremonies and the dancing with polished concrete floors, soaring timber trusses and full-height glazing that pulls the countryside straight into the room. The Stable Barn, warmer and more timbered, takes the wedding breakfast with a bar at one end and the paddocks in view. Linking them is The Press, a bar with modular seating and a wood-burning stove, while The Foundry adds a fire-cooking space with a rooftop drinks terrace and The Tack Room gives everyone somewhere to flop. Capacity runs to 156 seated and 200 in the evening.
Mornings start in The Paddock, a light, spa-ish getting-ready space with hair and make-up stations, showers and a view of the fields. There are 6 bedrooms sleeping 14 on site, including a honeymoon suite called The Bower, built imaginatively from repurposed materials. Catering comes through a short list of pre-approved kitchens who cook seasonally and locally, with food trucks welcome later on, and the whole place is exclusively yours for the day.
Where the band plays
The Cider Barn is the evening room, and it is a good one — big trusses overhead, a hard floor and a dancefloor already strung with fairy lights. Glazing on that scale is worth mentioning to your band, though, since a wall of glass reflects sound rather than absorbing it and a sensible act will angle things accordingly. There is a house sound system in place, which is useful for the gaps, and both live music and DJs are entirely welcome. With 200 people in the evening, a five- or six-piece has the numbers behind it; with a smaller guest list, four musicians in that room will still feel like plenty.
Timings and getting there
Evenings at Upton run to around midnight, which is about as good as it gets for a band — two full sets with a proper break between, an encore, and a room that has had time to warm up rather than being hustled off at 11pm. Worth confirming the bar and music times together when you book, since they usually move as a pair.
The location is a genuine advantage. Cullompton sits just off the M5, so acts coming down from Bristol, Bath or beyond reach it far more easily than they reach the Devon coast, which widens the list of bands realistically available to you. There is parking for 68 cars and level access, so load-in is straightforward even in the dark.
