Sandburn Hall has the rare luxury of space. The estate runs to around 1,000 acres of lakes, woodland and young plantation on the quiet farmland at Flaxton, just north-east of York, and the golf course laid out across it in 2004 has had time to settle into the landscape rather than sit on top of it. You turn off the road, the hedges close in, and by the time the hall appears the city feels a good deal further away than it really is.
The building couples come for is the Grand Hall, and it is a genuinely handsome thing — a big oak frame with arched beams overhead and floor-to-ceiling windows down one side, so the light and the view across the lakes and fairways do most of the decorating for you. It seats between 80 and 150 for a wedding breakfast and holds up to 200 in the evening, and it is yours alone; Sandburn takes one wedding a day and no more. For something smaller, the Sanderson Room does the same job on a more intimate scale, comfortable for 30 to 60 in the daytime and around 80 later on.
Outdoors there is real choice too. You can marry in the Rose Garden beneath the folly, or beside the water, or in the White Rose Garden that opened in 2017, with the Settle Bar kept private for drinks afterwards. Food comes from the same kitchen that runs Tykes, the estate restaurant, so it is cooked by people who feed guests here every day rather than by a caterer meeting the room for the first time. And nobody has to drive home: there are 40 bedrooms in the hotel, 2 of them suites with their own balconies, and the Griffon Forest lodges are about 10 minutes’ walk through the trees for everyone else.
Where the band plays
The Grand Hall is where the evening happens, and its proportions suit live music well. The oak frame and the height give a band room to breathe, and because the space handles dining and dancing in the same room there is no awkward migration halfway through the night — the tables are cleared, the floor opens up, and the party simply arrives where everyone already is. Bands tend to set up at the window end, which hands you the lake as a backdrop just as the light goes. It is worth asking the team early where they would like the stage on your particular layout, since the room can be dressed several ways.
How the evening runs
Sandburn lets celebrations carry on until 12.30am, and the shape most couples settle on is a first dance somewhere around 8pm, two sets from the band with a break for the evening buffet, and the last of the dancing at about midnight before the bar sees out the final half hour. Load-in is easy — level ground, good access and plenty of parking, which musicians appreciate more than you might imagine. Outside suppliers need approving in advance, so tell the coordinators who you have booked, and if you want music outdoors in the Rose Garden during drinks, that is worth confirming when you book.
