Pencoed House sits in a quiet fold of countryside at Capel Llanilltern, barely 20 minutes from the centre of Cardiff and yet completely out of earshot of it. The house is Grade II* listed and genuinely old — medieval in origin, though most of what you see belongs to the 16th and 17th centuries, built of local rubble stone under a Welsh slate roof. Architectural historians have long puzzled over a grand archway here that seems far too ambitious for the farmhouse the place later became, which tells you something about Pencoed’s story: it started out as a country mansion, came down in the world, and has spent the last decade or so climbing back up again.
A working estate, not just a room for hire
What makes it such a happy place to spend a wedding day is how much there is to wander into. The Old Hall is the heart of it, with rustic stone walls, magnificent oak beams, a vaulted ceiling, a log burner and a little balcony looking down over the floor. Next to it stands Cwrt Clive, an Italian-inspired glasshouse with fully glazed sliding doors, porcelain floors, underfloor heating and a roof that retracts on a warm night so you can see the sky. Beyond those there is a Woodland Bar, an orchard where a marquee can go up, and 36 acres of lawn, hedge and woodland to lose your photographer in.
Accommodation is unusually generous for an estate this size — a Manor House, a Gate House, barn and stable rooms, a cottage and a bridal suite among them — so much of your party can simply walk to bed. It is all exclusive use. The kitchen is in-house, run by a classically trained French chef, and the morning-after Welsh breakfast with homemade patisserie is quietly famous. The Old Hall seats 120 for the wedding breakfast and holds 200 in the evening; Cwrt Clive takes up to 140 by day.
Where the band plays
Most couples put the band in the Old Hall, and it is a room that flatters live music. Stone, timber and that vaulted ceiling give it warmth without the hard slap you get in a modern function suite, and the balcony overhead keeps the space feeling tall rather than crowded once the tables have gone back. With 200 in for the evening you have a proper crowd on the floor, and the bar and the terrace sit close enough that people wander back in the moment they hear something they recognise. If you would rather dance under an open roof, Cwrt Clive does that instead, with the gardens glowing just beyond the glass.
How the evening tends to run
The shape of the day here is unhurried: ceremony, drinks out on the lawn, dinner, then the room turned round while everyone is still outside. Music generally winds up at around 11pm, which is worth knowing when you plan the sets — better to let the band hit their best half-hour in the thick of the evening than to save it for a last dance that never quite arrives. It is worth confirming the exact finish when you book, as a live-music cut-off sometimes sits a touch earlier than the bar’s. Practically, the long drive down to the house and the parking beside the Old Hall make load-in painless, and with the estate to yourselves there is nobody else queueing for the doors.
