The drive alone is 3 miles long, which tells you most of what you need to know about the scale of Orchardleigh. It is a Victorian mansion a little north of Frome, set in 500 acres of its own parkland, and one of the very few wedding venues in England where the nearest neighbours are so distant that noise is simply not a consideration. There is a large lake with an island in it, and on the island a church, which is about as romantic an arrangement as the English landscape movement ever produced.
The house itself is generous and slightly theatrical in the way that good Victorian houses are, and the estate around it is a working one: a walled garden, a celebrated golf course, fishing, shooting and parkland that goes on and on. Ceremonies can be civil or religious, indoors or out — the island church, the Belvedere, or a licensed room inside the house. Accommodation is unusually plentiful, spread between the house, the castle, the boathouse and a couple of lodges, with beds for as many as 165 people, which is why so many couples here make a long weekend of it rather than a day.
Food can come from the in-house kitchens or from a caterer of your own, and there is no corkage on wine you bring yourself, which is rarer than it ought to be. The bar has a reputation for staying open rather longer than anybody planned. Between the Orangery, the option of a marquee and the sheer quantity of ground, Orchardleigh can be laid out almost any way you like, for anything from an intimate gathering up to 250 guests.
Where the band plays
The important thing here is that there are no neighbours to disturb, so there is no sound limiter in the usual sense and no need to choose a band for its ability to be quiet. That is genuinely unusual, and it means a big line-up — brass, a horn section, a soul band at full tilt — makes sense here in a way it never does in a village hall or a hotel in a valley. The estate also makes the outdoors work, which is the other thing all that land buys you: a jazz trio on the terrace through drinks, or something acoustic down by the lake, carries beautifully in the open air.
Settle your finish time before anything else
Finishes at Orchardleigh vary a great deal from one wedding to the next. Some evenings run all the way to midnight; others wrap up as early as 9.15pm or 9.30pm, usually because of how the day and the package were put together rather than anything to do with the venue itself. Those are completely different weddings, and they want different running orders and different acts, so get yours in writing before you plan anything around it. An early finish is no lesser day, incidentally — it simply moves the weight of the celebration forward, makes the daytime music matter more, and sends everybody to bed with something still in the tank.
