Manchester Hall at 36 Bridge Street spent most of its life as the city’s Freemasons’ hall, and the conversion into a listed events venue has been unusually respectful of that past. Behind the neoclassical stone facade and its tall sash windows, the rooms still carry their original wood panelling, their intricate plasterwork and, here and there, the all-seeing Eye of Providence looking down on proceedings. It gives the building an atmosphere that no amount of styling could manufacture — slightly mysterious, thoroughly handsome, and unmistakably Mancunian.
There are 11 distinct spaces, which means the building can host a very large wedding or a very small one without either feeling out of place. The Goulburn Suite is the grand room, with vast domed ceilings and a giant chandelier, and it takes up to 350. The Museum Suite is its opposite in mood — bright, airy and full of daylight from huge windows — and holds around 140. Smaller rooms with real character follow: the Library, the Drawing Room, the Club, the Study and the Lounge, all in the 50 to 70 range. Above it all, the John Rylands Roof Terrace is the largest space of the lot, seating 360 and taking up to 500 standing. Across the building, 310 can dine and 490 attend a reception.
Catering is in house, with halal, kosher, Asian, vegan and gluten-free menus all handled properly, and external caterers permitted where you need something specific. There are 8 bedrooms in the building plus bridal and honeymoon suites, and preferential rates at nearby car parks.
Where the band plays
The Goulburn Suite is the obvious room for a band, and a rewarding one: the domed ceilings give real height for sound to open out into, and the chandelier and panelling make a stage look like it was always meant to be there. A full line-up with brass will sound magnificent under that dome. The Museum Suite is the lighter alternative for a smaller act, and the roof terrace is a fine spot for an acoustic set during drinks. Rooms come with PA and speakers and you can play your own music through them, which covers the gaps between live sets neatly.
How the evening runs
Most of the building is licensed through to 1am, so there is room for a proper evening rather than a clipped one — dinner without rushing, speeches without watching the clock, then two full sets with time for an encore that nobody has to cut short. Since the venue holds several events at once across its 11 rooms, confirm which spaces are yours and how late music can run in each.
Bridge Street is a working city-centre street with no loading bay, so load-in and crew parking need arranging in advance. The Goulburn Suite is not at street level, so check the lift and stair access with the venue before a band arrives with a full kit.
