Lyde Arundel is one of those happy finds that sits barely a mile from Hereford yet feels thoroughly rural — a cluster of converted barns in secluded grounds, with gardens, a courtyard, a lake and even a vineyard on the doorstep. The appeal is a certain unfussiness. The barns are handed over as a blank canvas, and couples are free to leave them plain or dress them to within an inch of their lives; only one wedding takes place a week, so there is no sense of being processed through a conveyor belt, and the grounds are yours.
There are two barns to work with. The Haywain seats up to 100, and for larger celebrations it pairs with the Great Hall, which takes up to 200 at table with room for more guests to join in the evening. Both are licensed for civil ceremonies, as is the summerhouse out in the gardens for couples who would rather say their vows in the open air. The hire includes a good deal of what usually appears as an extra: tables and chairs in several styles, linen, heating, candles and decorative bits and pieces, planning meetings with the organisers and, in winter, a roaring log fire. Catering is arranged separately with your own choice of caterer, and a dance floor is a sensible addition if you want one.
Setting up is refreshingly relaxed. Access starts the Thursday before for a full day wedding, or the Friday for an evening reception, which gives you time to hang whatever needs hanging without doing it in a panic on the morning. Ceremonies are generally recommended from around 1pm, evening guests arrive from 6.30pm, and the cocktail bar can be tailored to whatever you fancy drinking.
Where the band plays
Converted barns are natural homes for live music, and the two spaces here give you a choice worth thinking about. A smaller celebration in the Haywain suits an acoustic set or a compact band, where the room does the work and nobody has to shout over the top of it. If you are using the Great Hall for a larger party, there is the volume to carry a fuller line-up and a proper dance floor. Because the barns are hired as blank canvases rather than fitted out with a stage, agree early where the band will set up, where the power comes from and how a van gets close to the doors — and remember a dance floor is hired in separately if you want one under everybody’s feet.
How the evening runs
The bar is licensed until 1am, which is later than a good many country venues manage and shapes the night rather pleasantly — a band can play two full sets after dinner and there is still a long, loose stretch of dancing afterwards rather than a sudden stop. Do check whether live music is expected to finish before the bar does, as the two are often different, and ask about parking and taxis for guests who are not staying nearby, given how close the city is.
