Hensol Castle

Hensol Castle is the sort of building that makes people slow down on the drive in. Grade I listed and some four centuries old, it stands in the Vale of Glamorgan with gothic towers, sweeping staircases and a serpentine 15-acre lake laid out in front of it, all within 650 acres belonging to the wider Vale Resort. It is only 11 miles from Cardiff and minutes from the M4, which is a rare combination: genuinely grand, genuinely easy to reach.

The castle takes weddings exclusively, so the whole building is yours for the day. It holds up to 150 for a wedding breakfast and 200 for the evening, and there are 23 bedrooms upstairs, individually styled, including bridal and honeymoon suites. Ceremonies happen indoors among the panelling and fireplaces or outside at the bandstand overlooking the lake, which on a still summer afternoon is about as pretty as south Wales gets. There is croquet on the lawn, a courtyard for champagne, and a jetty out over the water for the golden hour.

The cellars have been turned into the Hensol Castle Distillery, where gin is made and where guests can be packed off for a tour or a cocktail masterclass in the quiet hours before dinner — a genuinely good answer to the awkward gap while photographs are being taken. Catering is in-house, tastings are included, and the Vale Resort next door adds golf, a spa and a great many more bedrooms if your guest list outgrows the castle itself.

Where a band sits best

Castles can be tricky rooms for live music — lots of hard stone, lots of corners — but Hensol has the advantage of a dedicated banqueting space rather than a conversion, so the dance floor has a proper home rather than being squeezed into a corridor. With 200 in for the evening there is a substantial crowd to play to, and a five or six-piece with a horn or two will suit that number far better than a trio. The lakeside bandstand is the other opportunity: an acoustic set out there during drinks, with the water behind it, is the thing guests tend to remember afterwards.

How the evening unfolds

The pattern is a familiar and comfortable one — ceremony, drinks in the courtyard or by the lake, dinner in the castle, then the floor. Because so many guests are staying on site, either in the castle or over at the resort, the evening keeps its numbers late rather than thinning out at taxi o’clock, which is exactly what a band wants. Hensol will confirm your finish time and any noise limits for your date when you book; it is worth asking specifically about live music as well as the bar, since the two can differ. Access for load-in is good, with parking close to the building and staff used to handling suppliers.
