Hazel Gap sits in a quiet fold of the Welbeck Estate, a short drive from Edwinstowe and the ancient oaks of Sherwood Forest, and it announces itself rather grandly for a farm. A crenellated entrance flanked by a pair of watchtowers opens into a courtyard that feels instantly sheltered from everything else, with a fountain playing in the middle of it and mulberry trees, benches and planters softening the red brick around the edges. After dark the place changes character altogether — fairy lights overhead, lanterns along the walls and fire pits lit for anyone who wants to stand about with a drink and talk nonsense into the small hours.
Inside, the barn and the old farmhouse are joined by the Oak Room, a light-filled space under new oak timber work with long views over the gardens and woodland. It is the room that does most of the work on the day and the one guests tend to remember. Underfloor heating, open fires and a great many candles mean a February wedding here feels every bit as good as a July one, and the barn takes 150 for the ceremony and the wedding breakfast, rising to 250 once evening guests arrive. The whole site is yours alone for the day, which is really the point of it.
The food is cooked in-house and cooked over flame — barbecue and rotisserie are the house signature, carried out feast-style in bowls down the middle of the tables rather than plated in the kitchen, with wine chosen by an in-house buyer instead of bought off a list. There are no bedrooms on the site itself, but Cuckney House is five minutes away, an 18th-century manor sleeping up to 38 across 15 bedrooms, and a dozen more cottages can be rented on the Welbeck estate around you.
Where the band sets up
The barn is where the dancing happens, and it is a forgiving room for live music: high timbered ceiling, solid walls, and a shape that keeps a crowd close to the players rather than strung out down a long thin space. A Funktion-One system is installed, which is a serious bit of kit for a wedding barn and means a band can plug straight in for vocals and keys rather than hauling in a full PA. Couples here mix and match happily — a band for the live sets, a DJ between them, or simply a playlist through the house system late on.
How the evening runs
Hazel Gap holds a late licence until 1am, so there is no rush about any of it. A band playing through to around midnight still leaves time afterwards for last drinks and the fire pits in the courtyard, which is where most of the good photographs get taken anyway. Ceremony, meal and dancing all happen within the same cluster of buildings, so the turnaround between the wedding breakfast and the first dance is short and nobody has to be herded anywhere.
Worth knowing before you book
The barn is licensed for civil ceremonies, so you can marry, eat and dance without leaving the courtyard. Because there are no rooms on site, think early about taxis or a coach back to Cuckney House and the estate cottages. The venue doesn’t publish a sound limiter, but if your band travels with its own rig it is worth confirming the arrangement when you book.
