Great John Street began life as a Victorian school house in the streets behind Deansgate, and the conversion into a boutique hotel has kept just enough of that origin to be interesting without ever feeling like a theme. The two rooms that define it are quite different in character. The Oyster Bar on the ground floor is a two-tier space with beautiful Venetian railings and a glittering statement chandelier, and its split level gives a wedding a natural sense of drama; people gather above and below, and the room never feels flat. The trade-off is footprint: this is a boutique hotel, not a ballroom, so a four or five-piece is the sweet spot and the stage area needs agreeing in advance. There is a house sound system and dancefloor, which is useful for a smaller act during the day.

The hotel does not publish a blanket finish time for weddings — it depends on whether you have taken the building exclusively and on the package agreed — so settle it early, because it determines how many sets you book and when the band starts. What is consistent is the shape: drinks on the roof, dinner and speeches below, then the Oyster Bar turned over to dancing for the rest of the night.
Load-in is through a city-centre street rather than a loading bay, and the Oyster Bar’s split level means gear has to be carried rather than wheeled, so give the band a proper window and let them see the room beforehand if they can.
