Curds Hall Barn sits on a family farm at Little Fransham, roughly midway between the market towns of Swaffham and Dereham and a couple of minutes off the A47, which is a rare combination in rural Norfolk: genuinely open countryside with genuinely easy directions. The barn was restored and opened for weddings in 2020 and it is still run by the family who farm the land around it, so the welcome tends to be personal rather than processed.
The restoration is the thing that makes it. Old beams and a vaulted ceiling have been kept and celebrated, while floor-to-ceiling windows have been let into the walls to pull the fields and parkland straight into the room. The effect is a barn that never feels dim — you get the rustic bones and the light of a modern building at the same time, which is a difficult trick and much harder to achieve than it looks. It is deliberately a blank canvas, so it takes styling of almost any kind without arguing back.
Outside there are landscaped gardens running into open fields, several spots to hold an outdoor ceremony, lawns for drinks, a firepit with seating for later on and garden games for the lull after the meal. Hire is exclusive and runs across 3 days, with access the day before, which removes most of the panic from setting up. The main barn is licensed for civil ceremonies and seats 120 for the wedding breakfast, with up to 200 joining for the evening. You choose your own caterer from an approved list, there is no corkage on your own drinks through the reception and the meal, and the venue’s bar takes over in the evening. Accommodation on site covers 18 across the Old Coach House and a lodge cottage, with bell tents pitched on the parkland for anyone who fancies it.
Where the band plays
The barn comes with its own dancefloor and a PA with microphones, which covers speeches and background music and means a band only needs to bring its own kit for the evening. With one main room, most couples put the band at the opposite end from the top table so the floor sits in the middle and the room turns naturally from dining to dancing. High vaulted ceilings and hard surfaces make for a lively acoustic — good news for live music, and a reason to let a smaller band play a little softer rather than booking something enormous.
How the evening runs
Access the day before and a straightforward approach off the A47 make load-in about as painless as it gets, and there is parking on site with level access into the barn. Evenings here run through to around midnight, which gives a band arriving after dinner room for two full sets and something to send everyone out on, and leaves the firepit to do the rest. As at most rural barns it is sensible to check whether the music finish time sits a little earlier than the bar, and to let your band know before the day rather than on it.
