Chippenham Park is the sort of place half the county visits in February, when the snowdrop walks come out and the gardens open to anyone who fancies a cold, beautiful hour on the gravel. It is a privately owned Grade II listed house set in 300 acres of park on the Cambridgeshire and Suffolk border, a few minutes north of Newmarket, and its 35 acres of landscaped gardens are an RHS Partner Garden and thoroughly award-winning. Come back in April and the daffodils have taken over; by high summer the borders are doing something else entirely, which is a lovely problem to have when you are choosing a date.
The wedding side of the estate lives down by the lake, in a permanent marquee that is far more building than tent: two full walls of windows looking out across the park and the water, a proper kitchen and a permanent bar, a dance floor under a starlit ceiling, and a generous deck outside with tables, umbrellas and an optional fire pit for when the light goes. It seats 200 for a wedding breakfast and holds 250 in the evening. Ceremonies happen inside the house itself, out at the Lake Summerhouse, or in the village church a short walk away, and afterwards everybody spills onto the Rose Terrace for drinks and canapés under a canopy of trees. Crown Catering of Cambridge cook on site, the couple have a suite in the hall from midday, and five en-suite rooms in the converted potting sheds keep the wedding party close. The season runs from early April to early December.
Where the band plays
The marquee is a gift for live music. It is a big, clean, purpose-built room with its own dance floor and bar already in place, so a band isn’t squeezed into a corner of a dining room or asked to play around a fireplace, and there is no delicate historic plaster to worry about. The estate is entirely used to bands as well as DJs and will happily point you towards acts working out of Cambridge and Newmarket. Because the kitchen, bar and dance floor sit under one roof, the turnaround from dinner to dancing is quick, which is the single biggest thing that keeps a room full when the first song starts.
How the evening goes
What makes an evening here is the lake. The deck runs along the water, so between sets people wander out with a drink and the party spreads rather than thins, and the fire pit gives the smokers and the stargazers somewhere to go that isn’t the car park. Fireworks are available through local suppliers if you want a full stop. There is no published finish time, so agree the licensed hour with the team when you book and let your band build their sets towards it.
The practical side
Everything sits together at the lakeside, with vehicle access to the marquee and plenty of room in the park for parking, so load-in is straightforward and a sound check can happen while your guests are still up at the house or in the gardens. Worth asking about power provision in the marquee and whether any amplified-music limit applies, simply so your band knows before the day rather than during it.
