Cheylesmore Manor House is what survives of a medieval royal palace built around 1237 — a timber-framed gatehouse that once formed the entrance to a much larger residence used by Queen Isabella, mother of Edward III, and later by her grandson, Edward the Black Prince. It's said to be the only unfortified royal palace outside London, a genuinely rare thing to have surviving in the middle of a modern city.
The gatehouse sits just off Coventry's ring road, close to the cathedral and the rest of the city centre, and today it's run as a ceremony venue with three licensed rooms to choose from — the Queen Isabella Room, the Black Prince Room and the Library Room — each keeping the original timber framing and a scale that suits a smaller, more personal ceremony rather than a large one.
