Charlton Hall is a Grade II* listed 18th-century hall standing on its own private 150-acre estate at Chathill, a few minutes inland from the Northumberland coast and a short drive from Alnwick. It opened as a wedding venue in 2017 after a restoration that deserves the word bold: the historic bones kept and cherished, then filled with contemporary design that is confident, colourful and full of jokes. The hall runs over three floors. There’s a library, a drawing room and a dining room, two bars and — best of all — the Vaults, an underground speakeasy that guests tend to discover around the second drink. The Looking Glass is the glass-walled reception space, bringing the countryside straight into the room, and ceremonies are held in a striking Art Deco hall converted from an 18th-century stable barn. Outside there are lawns, two lakes and the delightfully named Isle of I Do for couples who want their vows surrounded by water.
Everything is exclusive use, and catering is handled in-house with a house wine list to match. Accommodation is generous: suites in the hall for the immediate party, eight lakeside cabins on the estate and further rooms nearby, so a good slice of your guest list can stay put. Ceremonies seat up to 140, the wedding breakfast takes the same, and the evening reception stretches to 200. The team have picked up regional and national awards, and are vocal about sustainability and genuinely inclusive weddings.

The evening reception is built around a dancefloor and an in-house sound system, with live music and DJs both welcomed. With 200 guests in for the evening you want a band that can command a room rather than provide background — and because the whole estate is yours, with no neighbouring function and nobody else’s guests upstairs, there’s a freedom here you don’t always get in a listed building. The Art Deco ceremony hall is a lovely room for something restrained and beautiful — a string trio, a harpist, a single voice — and its proportions flatter acoustic music. Through the drinks reception guests inevitably scatter across the lawns, the Looking Glass and the Vaults, and a mobile acoustic act or a jazz duo is the neatest way to give that wandering a soundtrack.
How the evening runs
Evenings here tend to run to around midnight, which gives you a full, unhurried night: dinner in the dining room, speeches, then the band taking the dancefloor through two sets with the last one landing while the room is still packed. Guests staying on the estate can then drift down to the Vaults rather than straight to bed. There’s on-site parking and a coordinator who will take the band’s timings and slot them into the day without you having to think about it.
