Carlton Towers rises without warning out of flat East Yorkshire farmland near Goole, a red-brick and stone confection of turrets, gables and traceried windows that would look entirely at home in a Victorian ghost story. It is one of England's largest privately owned country houses still lived in by the family who built it, and for a wedding it offers scale that is genuinely hard to find elsewhere in the region: room after room of state apartments and 17th-century origins wrapped in a full Gothic Revival remodelling that gives every photograph a slightly theatrical edge.
The house's principal rooms open into one another in the classic stately-home way, which suits a wedding day well. The Picture Gallery, hung with portraits and lit by a run of tall windows, is where the wedding breakfast typically happens and comfortably seats a substantial party for a banquet-style dinner. The Venetian Drawing Room offers a smaller, more intimate space for a ceremony or the drinks reception, and elsewhere in the house the Old School Room and a genuine priest's hiding hole give guests plenty to talk about between courses. Outside, a walled garden built around a working vineyard is an unusual and reliably photogenic setting for portraits, quite unlike the parkland most country houses offer instead.
Carlton Towers is dry-hire, so couples bring in their own caterer, and an overnight stay comes built in as standard: 16 individually decorated bedrooms in the main house, four further en-suite doubles, and two self-catering cottages along a tree-lined path from the house itself, so the wedding party and close family can all stay on site.
Where the band plays
The Picture Gallery's scale is the thing to plan around. It is a genuinely large room with a high ceiling and hard surfaces throughout, so a full band fills it properly rather than needing to be augmented. There is no fixed stage, so setting up at the gallery's open end usually gives the best sightlines from the dance floor and the most natural place for a bar to develop opposite.

The approach to Carlton Towers is a long, tree-lined estate drive rather than a public street, so unloading gear is straightforward with no parking restrictions or pedestrianised zones to negotiate. Being a private estate rather than a venue with fixed neighbours nearby, evenings here tend to have more flexibility than a town-centre venue, though it is always worth confirming the finish time and any sound limiter with the venue directly when booking, since these are set per event rather than fixed site-wide.
