Brinsop Court is the kind of house people assume has been turned into a hotel and then discover has not. A moated medieval manor in 800 acres of private Herefordshire countryside, it traces back to 1180, and the Banqueting Hall still carries the soaring vaulted ceiling of that period. The moat wraps around landscaped lawns, the drive runs in through farmland, and the nearest thing to an interruption is the weather. Hereford is a short drive away and entirely out of sight.
Weddings here are exclusive-use affairs, taken as a one-day celebration or stretched across two, and the estate has enough different rooms to let the day move rather than sit still. The Knot Barn is the largest, seating 180 or taking 250 standing; the Banqueting Hall seats 120 under that medieval roof; and the Elizabethan Library seats 94 for something smaller and more candlelit. Outdoors there is the Wordsworth Lawn, the cricket pitch lawn, a courtyard, the Astley Pergola and the woodland, all of which give you options for a ceremony or a drinks reception depending on which way the clouds are going.
Eighteen individually designed bedrooms sit within the manor itself, with Ivy Cottage and Wood Cottage alongside and glamping on the estate from mid-April to October, so a good part of the wedding party wakes up inside the moat. Catering is handled in-house as part of the package, dogs are welcome and can even be looked after for you, parking is free throughout the stay and there are electric charging points. Ground-floor rooms and the little touches — laundry, Egyptian cotton — suggest a team who have thought about the whole weekend rather than just the wedding breakfast.
Where the band plays
The Knot Barn is the room built for this. With 250 standing it gives a full band proper space, the height a drum kit and a brass section need, and a floor that can hold a crowd without anyone dancing in a doorway. Live bands and DJs are welcome there or in the Manor House Games Room, which gives you a genuinely useful second option: a band in the barn for the main event, then a smaller, later, louder room to carry on in once the first wave of guests has gone to bed.
How the evening runs
Music runs until midnight in either space, which is a comfortable shape for an evening — a band starting after dinner can play two or three sets and still land its last number while the room is at its fullest, with a DJ or a playlist to see out the tail end. Because so many guests are staying on the estate there is no exodus to taxis at half past ten, and the crowd a band plays to at 11 is very nearly the crowd it started with. Load-in is easy by rural standards, with hard access to the barn and parking that nobody has to fight over.
