Roaming Bands in Durham

Book a roaming band in Durham

A roaming band brings the music to your guests rather than asking them to come to the stage. The musicians move around the room or the garden, stopping to play to small groups of guests at a time, so everyone gets their own moment of live music. In Durham, roaming bands are booked for wedding drinks receptions, garden parties and corporate events.

Durham has a wide choice of wedding and event venues, from Ramside Hall Hotel and South Causey Inn to Hardwick Hall Hotel. Our roaming acts travel right across the area, including Sedgefield, Barnard Castle and Darlington, and can move between spaces as your guests do.

Roaming bands come in many styles. Some play acoustic versions of pop and chart hits, some play vintage swing and jazz, and others bring brass, folk or a New Orleans street-band feel. Watching a couple of videos is the quickest way to find the one that fits your day.

Since 1999, Hireaband has matched live bands with events of every size. The roaming acts listed here all travel to Durham, include travel in the price, and arrive with their own sound set-up where it's needed. The instant quote button shows pricing and availability for your date in seconds.

The essentials:

  • Typical cost: from around £800 for a smaller act to £2,500 or more for a larger band, depending on line-up, date and set times
  • The band moves around the room, playing to small groups of guests at a time
  • No stage and usually no power needed
  • Travel is included in every quote
  • Every booking carries a 14-day change-of-mind refund

A duo is ideal for smaller, conversation-led receptions. For a large wedding or a busy garden party, a four-piece or brass band carries further and makes more of a moment. Tell us the venue and guest numbers and we'll suggest what tends to work.

Expect to pay from around £800 for a smaller act up to £2,500 or more for a larger band. Line-up size matters most, then the date and extras such as an extra set during the meal. Every quote includes travel, so nothing is added later.

Every act's page has video and audio of the musicians who would actually play, their repertoire and written reviews from people who have booked them. It's the easiest way to check the style and the atmosphere before you commit.

The instant quote button gives you a price and availability for your date straight away. From there, we manage the contract and deposit and keep you updated until the event. Every booking is covered by a 14-day change-of-mind refund, and there's an emergency contact line on the day in case anything needs sorting.

FAQs

A roaming band plays acoustically while moving around the room or garden, stopping to play to small groups of guests at a time rather than performing from a stage. They're ideal for wedding drinks receptions, garden parties and corporate events where guests are mingling.

Usually not. Most roaming acts play fully acoustic, so they need no stage, PA or power. If they also play a static set with amplification, they'll let you know what they need.

Yes, and many bookings are outdoors. It's worth agreeing a covered spot with the venue in case of rain, and roaming acts can move inside quickly if the weather changes.

From around £800 for a smaller act to £2,500 or more for a larger band. The number of musicians, the date and the length of the booking make the biggest difference, and travel is always included in the quote.

Most play two or three sets of 30 to 45 minutes, which covers a typical wedding drinks reception. Longer bookings, or a mix of roaming and static sets, can be arranged when you enquire.

Yes. Many couples book a roaming act for the drinks reception and a separate band or DJ for the evening. We can quote for both together.

“Tommy and sons were brilliant at our wedding. We were so glad we booked them! Really friendly, great song list, sounded phenomenal and created an awesome atmosphere. They kept the dance floor full all evening. Loads of our guests commented on how great they were and asked for their details. Thank you!”

“Just to say a huge big fat thank you for the incredible music at our wedding at Bach Wen. You did a fantastic job and it was so great to everyone dancing the night away... exactly what we dreamed of.”

“We absolutely loved having you guys there and you definitely got the atmosphere right. We had a lot of comments that people loved the music during the day so a big thank you for that! Also, our guests LOVED having a band for the ceremony (rather than the traditional harpist or flute players). Our only regret is that we hadn’t booked you guys for longer or for the evening too! But we’ll definitely recommend you to friends and if we can think of a way to hire you again we definitely will! Thanks again ever so much”

“Tommy & Sons played our August 2022 wedding and were incredible. Guests all commented afterwards how awesome they were and how they got the dancefloor going big time! Jono and the band were so flexible with requests, and for giving the Bride & Groom such an incredible evening - even letting the Bride have a quick singalong. Thanks so much, gents - cannot recommend this band highly enough. They will not disappoint!”

“We're so grateful to Detroit Vintage Duo. They were perfect for the drinks reception. We wanted to create a happy and chilled atmosphere and they did this for us. They sounded awesome and played a fabulous range of music (that I saw everyone singing along to). I also need to highlight how helpful and lovely they were and how we wouldn't have been able to have the ceremony we wanted without them. We wanted our brother to sing us down the aisle, outside. We weren't sure how to do this as we couldn't use extension cables etc... Detroit Vintage Duo not only gave loads of advice on this but ended up coming early to loan my brother their equipment. Thank you so, so much guys.”

“We had an absolute ball throughout the day, and greatly appreciate the contribution you guys made – possibly the second most talked about part of the event (after the bride of course!)”
