How to Nail Your First Dance Song Choice
Insider tips from Hireaband on how to nail your first dance song choice and its delivery!
Of all the small decisions in wedding planning, the first dance song is one of the few that genuinely stops people in their tracks — for good reason. It's the one moment the whole room watches, just the two of you. Here's how to choose it, and how to make sure your band can actually deliver it properly.
Start with a feeling, not just a favourite song
Rather than starting from "what's our favourite song," it often works better to start from "what do we want this moment to feel like" — romantic and slow, a bit cheeky, or straight into something upbeat that gets everyone up dancing immediately afterwards. That framing tends to narrow things down faster than scrolling through a playlist together.
Take the pressure out of it
Recent wedding trends are showing a move away from traditions and set structures, so if you're not feeling the idea of having a first dance as a couple in the middle of the dancefloor on your own, you truly don't have to! You might choose to have it as a couple with all your bridal party too or if it's a slow dance, you can ask the band to encourage everyone to find a partner and dance (to help break the ice - in our experience it doesn't end up with singletons left out, your close friend might partner up with your granny or your work colleagues pair up!) Try not to stress out - if it's something you are fixated on all day, you won't enjoy the rest of it!
Check your band's repertoire first
Have a look through the band's existing set list to get a feel for their style. If the song you have in mind isn't already there, just ask — most professional bands will happily learn one new song specifically for your first dance, to make sure it's exactly as you pictured it.
Give them proper notice
Learning a song to the standard a band holds itself to takes real rehearsal time — generally at least eight weeks' notice is what's needed to do it justice. The earlier you lock in your choice, the more comfortable that timeline is, and the less pressure there is closer to the big day.
What if the song isn't right for a live band?
Not every track suits a live line-up — a huge, heavily produced orchestral ballad, for instance, may not translate well through a classic three or four-piece pop and rock band. If that's the case, or if you've got your heart set on a very specific choreographed routine, there's a simple solution: the band can cue the original recording, then seamlessly kick in live with their first song straight afterwards. You get the exact track you wanted for the dance itself, and a smooth transition straight into the party.

A few practical tips
- Confirm your song choice as early as you comfortably can — ideally well before the eight-week cut-off.
- If you're torn between two songs, ask the band which one suits their instrumentation better — they'll know instantly.
- Think about length — a song that runs six minutes might feel like a long time to be watched; lots of couples ask for a natural fade or cut partway through.
Your first dance doesn't need to be complicated to be perfect — just chosen with a little thought, and given the notice your band needs to do it justice. If in doubt, relax and get the crowd up!
